草本植物是指莖的木質部不發達,支持力較弱,這類莖草質莖。叫做草本植物如雞冠花﹑孔雀草等。
草本又分為一年生草本,二年生草本﹑多年生長本。
一年生草本: 指一年內完成其生活史,春天播种﹑夏秋開花﹑結果﹑秋天种子成熟﹑冬天地上部分枯死的植物。
二年生長草本:它們跨年度生長﹑生活史在一年內完成﹑較耐塞。在秋天播种﹑翌年春天開花﹑結果,夏天种子成熟而植物枯死。如瓜菊,菊花等。
多年生草本:多地下根﹑莖發達﹑每年春天可開花﹑結果。有些叫枯死。有些長綠。例如宿根﹑球根﹑水生﹑蘭花﹑結果﹑葳類等植物。
草本植物可用播种﹑扦插﹑分株方法繁殖﹑室內外綠化常用﹑例如客廳﹑門廳﹑餐廳﹑書房﹑陽台﹑室﹑辦公室﹑公園﹑校園﹑庭院等綠化美化環境。
