1986年上海園林學會、《園林》雜誌，上海文化出版社、上海電視台聯合舉辦了「中國傳統十大名花」評選活動。由一百多位園林花卉專家學者，組成評選委員會，歷時半年多、共收票約15萬張。確認了中國十大名花。
十大名花，是中國本土、栽培歷史悠久，在人們生活中應用廣泛，有歷史文化記載、并深受人們喜愛的花卉。它們是梅花、牡丹、菊花、蘭花、月季、杜鵑花、荷花、桂花、水仙、茶花。
這十大名花，經過上千年的栽培歷史，在人們心目中早已根深蒂固，成為中華民族精神文明的代表，成為當代社會進步和國家富強的標誌。
中國十大名花及美稱
(一) 牡丹：富貴花、花中之王
(二) 蘭花：花中君子、天下第一香、佳人、空谷。
(三) 菊花：花中君子、花中隱士。
(四) 梅花：花中君子、雪中高士。
(五) 荷花：出水芙蓉、花中仙子、花中君子。
